As a writing coach, I find it a privilege to help people use words to accomplish their purposes, whether for personal expression or practical intent. I coach in areas of content conceptualization and development, style, organization, grammar, punctuation-- as well as the many challenges encountered in the writing life, including finding time and space for writing, working through writer's block, and protecting your right to write.
Nonfiction is my forte as a writer. I dabble in fiction but prefer to help people write nonfiction, including the following:
- Memoirs
- Creative nonfiction
- Literary essays, personal essays
- Articles
- Grant proposals
- Business documents, including reports, resumes, and application letters
How Does the Writing Coach Process Work?
- You email me a short description of the project or issue you're working on and what kind of help you need. Tell me what you are writing and how long it will be. Tell me what kind of help you are seeking. (Conceptualizing the big picture, purpose, or shape? Setting goals and getting past procrastination? Sentence-level polishing and editing? Copy-editing and proofreading for errors?)
- I will email you back with any questions I have. Once you've answered them, I'll ask you to email me your piece-- or a portion of it.
- I will acknowledge the I've received your piece. I'll read it and email you a statement of what I will charge for my written comments and an optional phone call follow-up. I will also tell you how soon you can expect my feedback (usually within 1-2 weeks).
- Once you approve my fee, I will go to work.
- When I email you my comments, I will also bill you for my work, with receipt expected within two weeks.
- If you chose to have a follow-up phone call (generally fifteen minutes or less), we will arrange a time by email. Usually I will ask you to call me at the time we've agreed upon.
